-Applications Raman spectroscopic characterization of cells and tissues

Raman spectroscopy can be applied to samples in any form (gases, liquids, solutions, suspensions, solids).

Biological applications, at first consisting of studies of highly purified and concentrated solutions of biomolecules, such as nucleic acids and proteins, were initiated in the 60’s and 70’s of the last century. At that time it took several hours, with high laser powers to record a single spectrum.

In the meantime the technology has arrived at a point where in vivo measurements of complex biological samples such as cells and tissues can be carried out in a matter of seconds or less.

Raman spectra are powerful tools for classification and characterization of cells and tissues, including quantification of their molecular composition.

Because the technique is non-destructive, and does not require sample preparation, reagents, dyes, labels or other contrast enhancing agents, it is perfectly suited for in vivo application.

Real-time data analysis is possible, using sophisticated data analysis algorithms. River Diagnostics personnel have been at the forefront of these developments for over 10 years.
